October has been declared as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which evolved from the First Day of Unity in 1981 by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. The purpose was to bring together victim advocates across the nation. In 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness month was observed.

It’s interesting that only until recently was domestic violence a national issue that warranted widespread concern.

The Day of Unity is celebrated the first Monday in October.
