Roman civil law embraced the saying, “matrimonia debent esse libera” (”marriages ought be free”).

Just out of curiosity, I looked up ‘divorce’ in wikipedia to see what came up. And I thought I would share a few things I discovered about the history of divorce:

-Divorce existed in antiquity, and dated back to ancient Mesopotamia, at least.
-Ancient Athenians liberally allowed divorce.

I also discovered that:

-Athenian women were allowed to divorce, but if and only if their family agreed they should. And in all cases the woman lost her children who would stay with the father.
