Compulsive buying is typically associated with women, but last year Stanford University School of Medicine released a report that showed men and women have similar rates of compulsive buying, which can often lead to bankruptcy and divorce. In the study conducted, researchers found that 6 percent of women and 5.5 percent of men had symptoms of compulsive buying disorder.

There is some debate over whether compulsive buying should be classified as a mental disorder.
