A new child support plan in Virginia will give deadbeat parents a second chance to stay out of jail while also saving the state jail costs.

In 2007, 7,000 deadbeat parents were jailed with the average sentence lasting about 6 months.

State officials say that most child support delinquents don’t need jail time, but rather pressure from the court to pay up.

you can’t pay if you’re in jail. you shouldn’t be jailed if you have been paying, but fall behind due to circumstances like making less money, job loss, etc
