While the national trend shows more men are seeking alimony, that’s not the case everywhere. Divorce lawyers in Staten Island say there is still a stigma for men to seek support from their ex-wives.
The national average includes women who are outearning their husbands, but the gender roles seem to be very traditional in Staten Island where men are and continue to be the main breadwinners.
Because you have to make a case about how much money you make when seeking alimony, perhaps a lot of men don’t want to admit they earn less than their soon-to-be ex wives.
Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City and is the most suburban.
Are traditional gender roles less common in urban areas?
